![]() Others, like Frutiger and it’s numerous derivatives, don’t have much to do with renaissance letters. They just have that name because some of them, for example, Magma and Syntax, share construction similarities with renaissance types. Humanist sans serifs don’t really have much to do with Tory’s ideas or humanism. You might also want to look at Vervliet’s Paleotypography of the French Renaissance to see if he mentions it. I’m not sure how much influence Tory really had on type design most of the French types of that era are obviously based on the types Griffo cut for Aldus Manutius, to the extent that some systems of type classification lump both groups of types into one category. Also see chapter 14 of Updike’s Printing Types. You can find used copies of the English translation on Amazon. Tory was an influential type designer and publisher of the early sixteenth century. Or Stanley Morrison's idea of bringing Perpetua to life by having it cut by Malin. the constraints of the Linotype and Monotype systems – I think Van Krimpen came to the conclusion that they weren't really all that different, just different systems for proportions. Or maybe look at Gill and what he was trying to do (unrelated, but his illustrations for the Four Gospels are a gorgeous example of letters and human figures working together to great effect, each gives a little to accommodate the other and the parts would probably look a bit off in isolation). Calligraphy, stone cutting, sign painting and lettering guides etc. You might be better off looking into what makes forms "human" as opposed to "machine made", like the influence of the tool, skill and personal taste in forms. Most of this stuff seems to be designed for, or at least works better at, display sizes and would be impractical to use at scale in punch cutting (see the whole debate on the usefulness of the Roman du Roi diagrams and what Grandjean actually cut, or Moxon's ideas about dividing the body into 42 parts etc.). There are probably examples of other misguided renaissance artists post-rationalising the roman alphabet in similar ways, they seemed to enjoy that sort of thing. There are some questions included which ask learners to balance symbol equations. Equally, you may take the decision to leave it out at this stage. However, this could be used to develop understanding of redox reactions in further detail after finishing the practical work. Redox reactions are introduced in this video, in terms of losing and gaining electrons, with the expectation that learners have covered this before. ![]() It is unlikely that learners will have come across displacement prior to 14–16 study. Depending on where this topic falls in your learning sequence learners may not have practised balancing equations. This is recapped in the video and the balanced symbol equations are introduced. Learners may know the products of a metal + acid reaction and be able to write a word equation. Learners may have experience of investigating the relative reactivity of some metals at 11–14 using a simplified method, such as counting bubbles in a test tube. They should know the definition of an element and be able to identify metals and non-metals using the periodic table. Learners should be familiar with the periodic table of elements. Learners will need to have a clear understanding of the following scientific terminology: Tin will be more reactive than copper but less reactive than iron. Learners could repeat the displacement reactions experiment and include the unknown metal and metal sulfate. To add additional higher level extension to this content, you could introduce an unknown metal and its metal salt and then ask the pupils to do an experiment to find out where it fits in the reactivity series, for example you could use tin and tin(II) sulfate. Extension work based on the reactivity of metals practical Printable results tables are provided in the supporting resources booklet to save time in your practical lessons. This section of the video also looks at how to do a fair test. Caution learners against using the thermometer to agitate the metal in the acid as there is a risk of making a hole in the cup as well as damaging the thermometer. In the metal acid reactions observe the recommended concentration for the acid as there will not be a significant temperature rise at lower concentrations. TIP You may need to remove the metal in the copper(II) sulfate solution to see that it has a brown layer of solid on it – it will look black when in the blue solution. Consider demonstrating the copper(II) sulfate reactions on a larger scale, so learners can clearly see a change in the colour of solution – it may be harder to spot in the dimple tray. This minimises the amount of chemicals used. The displacement reactions are carried out in microscale using a spotting tile. These investigations may be spread over two or three lessons to make the content manageable. Exothermic reactions of metals and acid and metal displacement reactions are experiments that learners can carry out themselves. The first explores the reactions of the alkali metals in water and is a teacher demonstration. The video offers three experiments that investigate the relative reactivity of metals. It was also pretty easy to use, but I spent some time experimenting and still didn’t grasp its potential.īottom line, I’d recommend it for those new to baitcasters. I cast heavy and light lures and found the fine-tuning very useful and effective. I always return to the cold hard fact that effective casting is up to you, your technique, and your rig.īut there are some braking systems, Infini included, that do assist the angler in mitigating overrun. It’s far lighter than a steel frame, yet stronger than synthetics. While not the lightest reel, the alloy frame does keep weight down. Even in saltwater environments, the SX frame will endure splash and spray so long as it’s cleaned following each session. The alloy frame is the foundation of SX corrosion protection. The absence of twist prevents poor gear alignment, which can lead to slop, poor power transfer, and damage to gears. It ensures all power is transferred to the fight while under heavy loads. The one-piece alloy frame is strong and rigid, keeping the gears meshed and protected. Let’s check out some of the key features. The Abu Garcia Revo SX baitcasting reel looks good, feels great in your hand, and delivers in all key performance criteria.Īt this price point, it’s hard to pass up.įor this price point, the Revo SX inclusions are quite remarkable. With 24 pounds of pressure, you’re turning just about anything toward the boat.Īgain, confidence is a feature – spooled lightly, you still feel in charge even though the fish weight exceeds your line class. ABU’s DuraClutch has no back play and works as it should when striking. The gearing feels beautifully meshed, and I’ve no doubt the 9 corrosion-resistant bearings contribute significantly to the buttery feel. When testing cast distance, I hooked a black drum from what seemed like 100 yards away, and the crank was seamless, throughout its belligerent dives for cover. Whatever the case, it’s a particularly smooth crank that inspires confidence under load, encouraging you to look for big fish, ABU promises greater efficiency and durability, but I’d need to use it with a gen 3 for direct comparison. The Duragear brass gear adds to the weight, but most will agree there’s nothing better than reliable strength and durability.ĭ2 Gear Design was one of the upgrades for gen 4. Importantly, it keeps the gears protected, working in perfect mesh, transferring all power to the fight. The X2-Cräftic alloy frame is one-piece, rigid, and reasonably lightweight. Speed’s a premium these days, and the 7.2 SX allows the more focused angler to work a target zone in less time. The 7.2 will suit the anglers looking to flip and pitch. It’s quick, but not so much that working cranks is a chore. It’s a very forgiving reel, which is necessary for those learning the trade.Īvailable in two speeds, I prefer the 6.6 for versatility. In this regard, I like the SX for those new and inexperienced with baitcasters. In testing, we managed to back the brakes off altogether and still manage to avoid serious overrun. It’s not difficult to learn, but it will take a little time and experimentation to get savvy with the settings.īut those casting lighter lures and difficult lures that plane and react to the slightest breeze will enjoy the fine-tuning. While I’m not one for complicated features, this system works well with little to no fuss. The Infini brake system is dual centrifugal/magnetic. Those fishing with lighter gear or hunting a smaller class of fish are also well catered for, as the Infini brake system takes the fear out of fishing light. ![]() The Infini II spool design has enhanced casting and allowed for greater line loads – handy for mono anglers. With 24 pounds of drag and a spool that’ll hold 140 yards of 30-pound braid, you’re well-armed for tackling trophy fish.
